Llongyfarchiadau i Daniel Huws ar gyhoeddi ffrwyth ei ymchwil manwl ar lawysgrifau Cymraeg a Chymreig c.800–c.1800, mewn tair cyfrol.

1) Disgrifiadau o ryw 3,300 o lawysgrifau.

Congratulations to Daniel Huws on the publication of his extensive research on Welsh manuscripts c.800–c.1800, in three volumes.

1) Descriptions of around 3,300 manuscripts.
2) Information on some 1,500 scribes; with indexes of personal names, place names and subjects and texts.
3) Over 1,000 images representing the scripts of various scribes.

Mae Dr Daniel Huws, cyn-Geidwad Llawysgrifau a Chofysgrifau’r Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru a’r pennaf ysgolhaig ar lawysgrifau Cymraeg a Chymreig wedi cyhoeddi A Repertory of Welsh Manuscripts and Scribes, c.800–c.1800 sy’n benllanw blynyddoedd o waith ymchwil trylwyr ac yn gyfraniad tra sylweddol i ysgolheictod rhyngwladol. I ddathlu cyhoeddi’r Repertory ac i nodi pen blwydd Dr Huws yn 90 oed cynhelir cynhadledd ryngwladol ar amrywiol agweddau ar lawysgrifau Cymreig yn y Llyfrgell Genedlaethol rhwng 20 a 22 Mehefin.

Dyma gampwaith yn wir. Dathlwn ysgolheictod Dr Daniel Huws ac ymhyfrydwn yn y cydweithio agos a fu rhyngom wrth gyflwyno’r gwaith hwn i’r byd. Hoffwn ddiolch i bob un a fu ynghlwm â chyhoeddi’r cyfrolau hynod hyn.

Mae cyhoeddi’r Repertory yn achlysur hanesyddol a hoffwn longyfarch y Dr Daniel Huws yn wresog iawn ar ei gyfraniad aruthrol dros ddegawdau lawer at ysgolheictod ym maes llawysgrifau Cymreig.

Y Repertory fydd y cyhoeddiad pwysicaf ar lawysgrifau Cymraeg a Chymreig ers canrif a mwy, a bydd yn chwyldroi’r astudiaeth o hanes ein diwylliant a’n llên. Bydd y tair cyfrol yn cynnwys astudiaeth fanwl o lawysgrifau a ddiogelir yn ein prif lyfrgelloedd, megis y Llyfrgell Genedlaethol, Prifysgol Bangor, a chanolfannau megis y Llyfrgell Brydeinig a Llyfrgell Bodley, Rhydychen. Bydd hefyd yn rhoi sylw i lawysgrifau sydd wedi eu diogelu mewn mannau sydd ymhellach i ffwrdd, megis prifysgolion Harvard a Yale, coleg Stonyhurst, ac archifdy swydd Northampton. Ar sail y llawysgrifau hyn, dadansoddir gwaith a chymhellion yr unigolion a fu’n eu llunio – o’r Oesoedd Canol hyd at y Chwyldro Diwydiannol – gan ein cyflwyno i gymeriadau enwog yn hanes y genedl, i eraill a lwyr anghofiwyd ac i ambell gymeriad brith sy’n haeddu rhagor o sylw.

Dr Daniel Huws, former Keeper of Manuscripts and Records at the National Library of Wales and chief scholar of Welsh manuscripts has published A Repertory of Welsh Manuscripts and Scribes, c.800–c.1800 and is the culmination of many years of thorough research and is a substantial contribution to international scholarship. To celebrate the publication of the Repertory and to mark Dr Huws’ 90th birthday, an international conference on various aspects relating to Welsh manuscripts will be held at the National Library between 20 and 22 June.

The publication of the Repertory is a historic occasion and I warmly congratulate Dr Daniel Huws on his tremendous contribution over many decades to scholarship in the field of Welsh manuscripts.

This will be the most important publication on Welsh manuscripts for over a century, and will revolutionize the study of our culture and literature. The three volumes will include a detailed study of the manuscripts safeguarded by our main libraries, such as NLW, Bangor University, and centres such as the British Library and the Bodleian Library, Oxford. It will also look at manuscripts that are kept further afield in places such as the Universities of Harvard and Yale, Stonyhurst College, and Northamptonshire Archives. On the basis of these manuscripts, the work and motives of the individuals that created them is analysed – from the Middle Ages up to the Industrial Revolution – introducing us to notable individuals in the history of the nation, to some that have been long forgotten and other more interesting characters that deserve further attention.
