1898 Priodas yn Horeb / Wedding

James Arthur James a Jane Jones

Llun priodas James Arthur James (Penrhyn-coch) a Jane Jones (Glanyrafon, Elerch) ar 17eg Mehefin 1898.
Mae’n debyg mai Laura James, sef chwaer James Arthur, sy’n sefyll tu ôl iddo. Roedd hi’n cadw siop yn Garth Isaf. Cadwyd y siop wedyn gan nith iddi, Laura arall. Roedd hi’n un o’r tystion i’r briodas. Roedd tad James Arthur, sef William James, yn dal yn fyw ar y dyddiad hwn ac efallai mai ef sy’n eistedd ar y chwith iddo yn y llun. Roedd William yn oruchwyliwr cynorthwyol plwyf Trefeurig yr adeg yma.

Ar y dde eithaf mae y Parchg Henry Evans, gweinidog Horeb, a oedd newydd ddychwelyd o’r UDA y flwyddyn cynt.
Yn ôl cyfrifiad 1901 roedd Henry Evans, 40 oed, yn wreiddiol o Aberdâr, a’i wraig Harriet R., 36 oed, a anwyd yn Llanelli, yn byw yn Horeb Villa gyda’u tair merch Olwen Mary, 6, a anwyd yn Slatington, Penn.; Martha Gwyneth, 4, a anwyd yn Llanelli a Sarah Dilys, 1, a anwyd ym Mhenrhyn-coch.

Yn ôl cyfrifiad 1911 mae James James, 42 oed, a’i wraig Jane, 43 oed yn byw yn Felin Cwmbwa gyda’u 6 plentyn, Mary, 11, Elizabeth, 10, Gwladys, 8, Laura, 6, Margaret, 4, a David William, 3

A photograph of the wedding of James Arthur James (Penrhyn-coch) and his bride Jane Jones (Glanyrafon, Elerch).
The lady standing behind James Arthur is believed to be his sister, Laura, who ran the shop at Garth Isaf (and was succeeded by her niece, another Laura James), and she was one of the witnesses to the marriage. James Arthur’s father, William James, was still alive at this time and could be the gentleman sitting to the left of the bridegroom. William James was an assistant overseer for Trefeurig.

The gentleman standing on the far right is the minister of Horeb Baptist Chapel Henry Evans, who had recently returned to Wales from the USA.

According to the 1901 census Henry Evans, 40, Baptist Minister, a native of Aberdare, and his wife Harriet R., 36, born in Llanelli, were living in Horeb Villa with their three daughters, Olwen Mary, 6, born in Slatington, Pennsylvania; Martha Gwyneth, 4, born in Llanelli and Sarah Dilys, 1, born in Penrhyn-coch.

According to the 1911 census James James, 42 years old, and his wife Jane, 43 years old, were living at Cwmbwa Mill with their 6 children Mary, 11, Elizabeth, 10, Gwladys, 8, Laura, 6, Margaret, 4, and David William, 3.

Mae yr un Laura James (chwaer James Arthur) yn y llun hwn (rhes gefn yr ail o’r dde). Ym 1901 roedd Laura James, 34, yn cadw siop groser yn Garth isaf ac yn byw yno gyda’i mam Jane, 65 oed a’i nith Annie, 2 oed. Erbyn 1911 roedd Laura James, nawr yn 44, yn dal yno, ac Annie James, 12 oed, nawr yn mynd i’r ysgol leol.
Mae’r enw Marged Rowlands ar y llun ond nid yw’n glir pa un yw hi.
Sylwer: Mae yna Margaret Rowlands, 41 oed, yn byw gyda’i rhieni John (glowr) a Margaret Davies ym Mhenrhyn-coch yng nghyfrifiad 1901.

Mae bedd y teulu James ym mynwent Horeb (ail lun). Bu farw Elizabeth yn 12 oed ar 31 Ion. 1913; bu farw ei mam Jane ar 16 Tach. 1931, yn 64 oed; bu farw merch arall Laura ar 17 Hyd. 1936, yn 32 oed. Ar 19 Hyd. 1939 bu farw James A. James yn 70 oed.

The same Laura James appears in this photograph (back row 2nd from right). In 1901 Laura James, 34, had a grocer’s shop in Garth Isaf, and lived there with her mother Jane, 65 years old, and her 2 year old niece Annie. By 1911 Laura James, now 44, is recorded as a grocer at Garth, and Annie James, 12, was now attending the local school.
The name Marged Rowlands appears on the photograph beneath the lady in the front row on the right-hand side.
Note: According to the 1901 census, there was a Margaret Rowlands, 41 years old, living in Penrhyn-coch with her parents John (a coal miner) and Margaret Davies.

The family gravestone is in Horeb cemetery (second photo). One daughter Elizabeth died at the young age of 12 years on 31 Jan 1913; Jane died on 16 Nov. 1931, 64 years old; another daughter Laura died on 17 Oct 1936, 32 years old. James A. James died on 19 Oct. 1939 aged 70
